Overview

Grant F. Allison is a member of the firm’s litigation department, focusing his practice on business, corporate, real estate, land use, condominium association, and complex commercial litigation. A cum laude graduate of the William S. Richardson School of Law, Grant was a member of the Phillip C. Jessup International Moot Court Team.

Grant represents a wide range of clients, including service, wholesale, and retail businesses in complex litigation matters. Grant also represents lessors, lessees, property owners, developers, and real estate brokers and professionals in real estate litigation matters, including ground rent redeterminations, breach of contract and lease disputes, and in arbitrations and lawsuits before state and federal courts.

Before attending law school, Grant gained valuable experience as a staff appraiser and analyst at one of Hawaii’s leading commercial real estate appraisal firms. His background, combined with an M.B.A. from the Shidler College of Business, provides him with exceptional insights in matters that involve real estate valuation, development, investment, and finance.

In addition to his legal practice, Grant was the captain of college water polo team and remains active in the water polo community, serving on the board of Hawaii Water Polo Inc.

Experience

Real Estate and Land Use Litigation

  • Regularly represents lessors and lessees in ground rent redeterminations and arbitrations for commercial, residential, and industrial properties across Hawaii.
  • Represented property owners, buyers, and brokers in disputes concerning sale contracts, disclosures, rents, and other lease or contract matters.

Business and Commercial Litigation

  • Represented a local restaurant chain in business loss claims against suppliers and distributors for tainted ingredients, achieving a favorable settlement.
  • Defended a community association in Gelsey v. Ka Ono Ulu Estates Community Association, prevailing on all counts at trial.

Appellate Advocacy

  • Represented a client in Kaiser Found. Health Plan v. Queen’s Med. Ctr. (2022), addressing significant issues at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Construction and Contract Disputes

  • Counseled clients in construction disputes involving development, contract breaches, and property claims.

  • Property Owners and Lessors: Assisted in ground rent redeterminations and lease disputes across all counties.
  • Businesses and Corporations: Pursued business loss claims, securing favorable settlements.
